Landscape Photography Points

We'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints today. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will start winning photo contests! It's practically a given!

Yesterday we talked about light.

First we discussed the color of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak and you have to get up early in the morning. AND also you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sundown.

At those times there's a phenomenon we will call a 'fictitious' dawn and sundown that could produce some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates a lot of shadows that define their muscles and highlight.

At dawn and dusk, the glancing light from the sun is right at the best angle to produce lots of defining darkness. This will add a lot of third dimensionality to your photos and make them come alive!

Attempt shooting the same scene at both dusk and morning, then compare the outcomes to the same scene shot at noon. You'll never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky shooting. This will definitely add a great deal of visual interest to the scene - as well as plenty of shade. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is awful... Get out there! That is the time you will receive the very best shots.

Today, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Utilize a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, especially in the daybreak - you'll need a long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of trying to get a competition winner by shooting handheld. It won't occur.

Then, use the mirror lockup feature if your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a shutter release that is timed. It may seem like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a major difference.

As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to attract on the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What's the most crucial component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place in the upper third.

They are uncommon while there are times that placing the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Be sure you have a specific reason to do this!

Last but not least... Ensure that your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Be sure that attribute is accented by you and drive the viewer's focus to it. Do not make the mistake of attempting to make the whole scene equally important. You need a star.
