Landscape Photography Hints

Today we'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will begin winning photo competitions! It's nearly a given!

Yesterday we discussed light.

First we discussed the color of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak and you must get up early in the morning. AND you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.

At those times there's a phenomenon we will call a 'fictitious' sunrise and sundown that could create some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates plenty of shadows that define their muscles and accent.

At daybreak and dusk, the glancing light from the sun is at the best angle to produce a lot of defining shadows. This will definitely add a lot of third dimensionality to your pictures and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both morning and dusk, then compare the results to exactly the same scene shot at noon. You may never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This will add a great deal of visual interest to the scene - in addition to lots of color. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is bad... Get out there! That's the time you will receive the very best shots.

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography tips and techniques.

Utilize a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the daybreak and post sunset times - you will require a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field requires shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a competition winner by shooting handheld. It won't occur.

Afterward, utilize the mirror lockup feature in case your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a major change, although it may seem like a little overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground as far as composition is concerned! Use it to attract on the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What is the most important component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place in the upper third.

They're uncommon, while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the right call. Make sure you are in possession of a specific reason to do so!

Last but not least... Be sure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Make sure you accentuate that attribute and drive the audience's attention to it. Don't make the mistake of trying to make the whole scene equally significant. You will need a star.
