Composition - The Soul of the Photo

Composition is the soul of the photo. Composition results in the work of art that begins from inspiration. Inspiration starts when you free the spirit to experience the world around you and disconnect with the interior struggles of everyday life. Actually being in the moment and experiencing nature links you with all around you.

It may seem like meditation, but the mind is cleared by comprehension of your surroundings without hindrance of outside thoughts and sharpening your senses. Pictures appear where you did not see them. The components begin to art and align appears.

Joseph Cornell in his novel 'Listening to Nature How to Deepen Your Awareness of Nature' had this exercise. Walk into a place which you would like to photograph. Instead of shooting and setting the camera up. Sit down. Wait. Relax. Be still and sense the instant. Really gently become aware of nature. The Native Americans called this 'silent hunting'. You will be spoken to by nature, but you should be quiet. Nature talks softly. Nature will reveal herself to you, in case you are patient. And unbelievable images will appear.

There are many times that I've entered the woods with camera in hand and not found anything that I needed to photograph. It might be that I wasn't prepared or nature didn't want to reveal herself. That day, maybe she didn't feel photogenic. Scenes appear as if by magic, other days. So do not be disappointed if you can not find anything to shoot on any given day. Utilize that time to scout the area for future opportunities and revel in the fact that you have a chance to be outside.

Take this as a chance to plan for future shots. At these times think, what if the light was coming from a different direction. Coming back in the early morning or late afternoon may generate a better image. Seasons change the landscape. Maybe shooting with the leaves in brilliant colours, in the autumn, or winter with a fresh layer of snow would create the photo that you want.

When seeking that image, do not run yourself. Time with nature is a delight all by its own self. In the event you don't find anything to shoot, the absolute joy of being one with the outdoors is worth the experience.

For the photo tip of today, lets talk a bit about landscape photography tips and techniques. Many of us have not actually attempted using them, although this is going to be a review of matters we've discussed before. Set as a goal for this weekend to get out there and use these landscape photography tips and techniques to create something you can take pride in!

Light - with a portrait, we have total control. We can adjust the light levels, we can set our light where we need, we can put modifiers in front of it - like umbrellas, scrims, diffusion substance, gobos and so on... We can do pretty much anything we wish to get the image our mind has conjured up!

With cityscape and landscape photography, we are pretty much stuck with what nature supplies us. There is not much we can do.

Or is there? With some preplanning, we can virtually guarantee a gorgeous shot!

In an outside, landscape setting, there isn't much we can do to modify or correct the light, but we can become hyper aware of what light does at various times of day - and in various weather conditions.

First and foremost to be successful as a landscape or cityscape photographer - you must truly have a desire to lose sleep.

What am I talking about? Glad you asked! In case you'd like to start capturing those remarkable landscape photos with all the stunning colours, there is really just two times of day to shoot - at dawn and at dusk.

However, for a photographer, twilight and dawn are a bit more expanded than you are perhaps thinking. About twenty minutes before the sun first peeks over the horizon in the morning there is a 'false' dawn. You will be given those intense cobalt blue colours you see in contest winners, but have not been able to find in nature by this time of day!

As the sun gets nearer and closer to the horizon, the colors will start to get pinker. The colours you see at dawn AREN'T exactly the same as the colours you see at sunset. (They are more red and orange.)

Thus, drag yourself out of bed a couple hours before daybreak in order you will have the time to grab a cup of coffee (so you're alert enough to focus) and make your way to your predetermined place, get set up and begin shooting during the false dawn.

See what I mean about wanting an urge to reduce sleep? Hereis the good thing, most of your pals as well as camera club competition will probably be snoring away while you 'get the chance!'

Incidentally, there's a false sunset about 20 minutes after the sun goes down. You aren't spending that time watching TV are you?

In addition to the excellent colors, you also get excellent light angles!

Consider the last photo you saw of a body builder... Where was the light? I'd venture to guess that it was to the side. Actually about 90 degrees to the camera - version axis.

This peeking side light causes heavy shadowing around the muscles making them look larger and really more defined. The light causes some specular highlights also - which makes the difference between highlight and shadow even more striking.

Now think of your landscape or your cityscape as a version that is muscle bound. The shadows caused by the glancing sun will help define and accentuate the shapes.

Next look for an interesting scene! Use foreground elements to draw the eye into the photo. Utilize the rule of thirds, leading lines, diagonals and other compositional techniques to attract the observer's eye to the 'star' of your photo. (Be sure you have a well defined 'star!')

Finally, throw in a number of clouds to reflect the sun's colors and add some visual interest to the sky and you may be well on your method to winning photo competitions!

Do all of this at dawn - then do a picture of exactly the same scene at midday. Finally, do it at sundown and compare all your results. I believe you will quickly start to recognize just how significant rules, techniques and all the photo tips we have been discussing actually are!

Take record of these landscape photography hints and techniques, and make it a target to USE THEM this weekend! Check back tomorrow for more...
