Landscape Photography Recommendations
We will continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints now. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you'll start winning photo contests! It's nearly a given!
We discussed light yesterday.
First we discussed the color of light... You must get up early in the morning and begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND also you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.
At those times there is a phenomenon we'll call a 'bogus' sunrise and sunset that could create some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photos.
Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photos. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates plenty of shadows that emphasize and define their muscles.
At daybreak and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is at the right angle to produce plenty of defining shadows. This will definitely add a great deal of third dimensionality to your photos and make them come alive!
Try shooting the same scene at both morning and twilight, then compare the outcomes to exactly the same scene shot at noon. You'll never sleep in again!
Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This will add a lot of visual interest to the scene - as well as a lot of shade. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is poor... Get out there! That's the time you'll get the best shots.

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography tips and techniques.
Utilize a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, particularly in the morning - you'll need a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of trying to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It will not happen.
Subsequently, use the mirror lockup feature in case your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.
For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, make use of a shutter release that is timed. These sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference, although it might appear like a bit of overkill.
As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so forth.
Another compositional element to consider is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most crucial component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place the horizon in the upper third.
They're rare while there are times that setting the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Make sure you are in possession of a special reason to do that!
Last but not least... Ensure that your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Make certain that feature is accented by you and drive the viewer's focus to it. Do not make the blunder of trying to make the whole scene equally important. You'll need a star.
