Composition - The Spirit of the Photo

Composition is the spirit of the photo. Composition leads to the work of art that begins from inspiration. Inspiration starts when you free the spirit to have the universe around you and disconnect together with the internal struggles of everyday life. Experiencing nature and truly being in the moment links you with all around you.

Comprehension of your surroundings without interference of external thoughts clears the mind, although it may sound like meditation and sharpening your perceptions. Where you did not see them images appear. The components begin to align and art appears.

Joseph Cornell in his book 'Listening to Nature How to Deepen Your Awareness of Nature' had this exercise. Walk into an area that you would like to photograph. Instead of shooting and setting the camera up. Sit down. Wait. Relax. Be still and feel the moment. Quite gently become conscious of nature. The Native Americans called this 'silent hunting'. Nature will speak to you, but you have to be quiet. Nature talks gently. Nature will reveal herself to you in the event that you are patient. And unbelievable images will appear.

There are numerous times that I have entered the woods with camera in hand and not found anything that I needed to photograph. It may be that I was not ready or nature did not wish to reveal herself. That day maybe she did not feel photogenic. Scenes appear as if by magic, other days. If you can't find anything to shoot on any specified day, so don't be disappointed. Choose this as an opportunity to plan for future shots. At these times believe, what if the light was coming from an alternate direction. Coming back in the early morning or late afternoon may produce a better image. The landscape changes. To assist anyone that's interested I've recorded a couple of suggestions below on what is necessary to shoot through the night. I have been getting a little into nighttime landscape photography of late. Yesterday evening I had lots of enjoyment with some fellow pictures playing with different coloured lights to create effects that we can't record with normal individual eyesight. Long exposures open-up a world of possibilities and imagination. The image below was taken over the course of 2 minutes whilst my fellow photographer buddy Ian Dixon slowly transferred his feet 360 degrees around a pivot point whilst spinning a coloured LED light. Whilst it sounds like a straightforward procedure in theory as the distance in the swings has to be kept continuous, it's in fact rather tricky to form a perfect sphere. Getting it right makes for an intriguing effect and something to add further visual interest to a night time landscape photograph.

Night Landscape Photography Tips:

Please note you'll require a camera equipped with the flash mode

Look through the optical view finder - Live View is going to be useless to you when composing an image. Better still try and arrive whilst it's still light to allow you to compose the scene and focus

Should you have to focus in the dark, utilize a torch to illuminate the focal point and when you can't manually focus by illuminating the desired focus point, set the lens to infinity and back it off by only a millimetre or two

Set your White Balance to Auto

With your camera set to Aperture Priority (AV) mode, set the aperture to f/8 and raise your camera's ISO to the maximum (i.e. 1600). Depress the shutter button and observe what the calculated shutter speed is

Now switch from the AV mode to the Flash mode - this is the only mode which allows you to capture exposures greater than 30 seconds

Eventually, fall the ISO to 100 and adjust the shutter speed to compensate. By way of example, decreasing the ISO from 1600 down to 100 symbolizes 4 stops (800, 400, 200, 100) where every time you halve the value it equals to one stop. What this means is that if the shutter speed was 30 seconds previously then it'd need to be corrected to rise by 4 stops which would be 480 secs (8 mins) (60, 120, 240, 480). It is necessary to maintain depth of field that you desire and not the aperture as to change the shutter speed

Bonus Hint: Avoid turning on the camera's noise reduction as it will bring about taking longer for the image to write to the memory card (the same amount of time as required for the exposure) before becoming accessible for viewing on the LCD screen. Instead reduce any noise which could have been introduced during the Post Production process into the image
