We talked about light yesterday.

First we discussed the colour of light... Begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak and you need to get up early in the morning. AND also you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.

At those times there's a happening we'll call a 'bogus' sunrise and sunset that could produce some absolutely stunning colours in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates plenty of shadows that emphasize and define their muscles.

At dusk and daybreak, the glancing light from the sun is at the right angle to create a lot of defining darkness. This will add lots of third dimensionality to your photos and make them come alive!

Attempt shooting the same scene at both morning and dusk, then compare the outcomes to the same scene shot at midday. You'll never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned shooting when there are clouds in the sky. This will definitely add a lot of visual interest to the scene - in addition to lots of colour. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is lousy... Get out there! That is the time you'll get the top shots.

Today, let us add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, particularly in the predawn and post sunset times - you'll need an extended exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field necessitates shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of attempting to get a competition winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.

Afterward, make use of the mirror lockup feature if your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a major change, although it might seem like a little overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw on the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional component to think about is the horizon, make it level! What's the most important element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, set on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Set the horizon in the upper third.

They're rare while there are times that setting the horizon in the middle is the right call. Be sure to have a special reason to do so!

Last but not least... Ensure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Make certain you emphasize that characteristic and drive the audience's focus to it. Don't make the mistake of trying to make the entire scene equally important. You require a star.
