Composition - The Heart of the Photo

Composition is the heart of the photo. Composition results in the work of art that begins from inspiration. Inspiration begins when you disconnect together with the interior battles of everyday life and free the spirit to have the universe around you. Truly being in the moment and experiencing nature links you with all around you.

Comprehension of your surroundings without interference of external ideas clears the mind, although it may sound like meditation and sharpening your perceptions. Where you didn't see them before images seem. The elements begin to align and art emerges.

Joseph Cornell in his book 'Listening to Nature How to Deepen Your Awareness of Nature' had this exercise. Walk into a place that you'd like to photograph. Rather than setting the camera up and shooting. Sit down. Wait. Relax. Be still and feel the instant. Very gently become aware of nature. The Native Americans called this 'silent hunting'. You personally will be spoken to by nature, but you should be quiet. Nature talks softly. Nature will reveal herself to you, in the event you are patient. And unbelievable images will appear.

There are lots of times that I have entered the woods with camera in hand and not found anything that I wanted to photograph. It might be that I wasn't ready or nature didn't need to reveal herself. Perhaps she did not feel photogenic. Other days, scenes appear as if by magic. So don't be disappointed if you can't find anything to shoot on any specified day. Utilize that time to scout the place for future opportunities and revel in the fact that you have a chance to be outside.

Choose this as a chance to plan for future shots. At these times think, what if the light was coming from another way. A better image may be produced by coming back in the early morning or late day. The landscape changes. Perhaps shooting in the autumn, together with the leaves in brilliant colors, or winter with a fresh layer of snow would create the photo that you desire.

When seeking that image, do not hurry yourself. Time with nature is a delight all by its self. The absolute pleasure of being one with the outdoors is worth the encounter, in case you don't find anything to shoot.

For the photo tip of today, lets chat a bit about landscape photography hints and techniques. This will be a review of things we've discussed before, but a lot of us haven't really attempted using them. Place as a goal for this weekend to get out there and use these landscape photography hints and methods to create something you can take pride in!

Light - with a portrait, we've got total control. We can adjust the light levels, we can set our light where we desire, we can set modifiers in front of it - like umbrellas, scrims, diffusion substance, gobos and so on... We may do pretty much anything we need to get the image our mind has conjured up!

With cityscape and landscape photography, we're pretty much stuck with what nature supplies us. There's not much we can do.

Or is there? With some pre-planning, we can almost ensure a gorgeous shot!

In an outdoor, landscape setting, there's not much we can do to modify or correct the light, but we can become hyper aware of what light does at various times of day - and in various weather conditions.

First and foremost to achieve success as a landscape or cityscape photographer - you need to really have a urge to reduce sleep.

What am I talking about? Glad you asked! There's actually only two times of day to shoot in the event you prefer to start capturing those spectacular landscape photos with all the beautiful colors - at morning and at dusk.

But for a photographer, morning and twilight are a little more expanded than you are perhaps thinking. About twenty minutes before the sun first peeks over the horizon in the morning there's a 'bogus' dawn. This time of day will give you those intense cobalt blue colours you see in competition winners, but have not been able to find in nature!

As the sun gets closer and closer to the horizon, the colors will begin to get pinker. The colors you see at morning AREN'T exactly the same as the colors you see at sunset. (They are more red and orange.)

So, drag yourself out of bed a couple hours before dawn so you will have sufficient time to grab a cup of coffee (so you're conscious enough to focus) and make your way to your predetermined spot, get set up and begin shooting during the false dawn.

See what I mean about needing an urge to lose sleep? Hereis the good thing, the majority of your buddies as well as camera club contest will probably be snoring away while you 'get the shot!'

Incidentally, there is a sunset that is fictitious about 20 minutes following the sun goes down. You aren't spending that time watching TV are you?

Along with the fantastic colors, you also get excellent light angles!

Think of the last photo you saw of a body builder... Where was the light? I'd venture to guess that it was to the side. Actually about 90 degrees to the camera - model axis.

This peeking side light causes heavy shadowing around the muscles making them seem larger and truly more defined. The light causes some specular highlights also - which makes the difference between shadow and highlight even more striking.

Now think of your cityscape or your landscape as a muscle bound model. The shadows brought on by the peeking sun will help emphasize and define the shapes.

Next look for an intriguing scene! Use foreground elements to draw the eye into the photo. Make use of the rule of thirds, leading lines, diagonals and other compositional techniques to draw the viewer's eye to the 'star' of your photo. (Be sure you've got a well defined 'star!')
