Landscape Photography Points
Now we'll continue our review of landscape photography tips and techniques. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you'll begin winning photo competitions! It is almost a given!
We discussed light.
First we discussed the color of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak and you must get up early in the morning. AND you also need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sunset.
At those times there's a happening we will call a 'bogus' sunrise and sunset that can create some absolutely stunning colours in your landscape and cityscape photos.
Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates a lot of shadows that emphasize and define their muscles.
At dusk and daybreak, the glancing light from the sun is at the perfect angle to generate lots of defining darkness. This will definitely add your photographs and lots of third dimensionality and make them come alive!
Attempt shooting the same scene at both dusk and morning, then compare the results to the same scene shot at noon. You will never sleep in again!
Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This will add a lot of visual interest to the scene - in addition to lots of colour. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is bad... Get out there! That's the time you will receive the top shots.

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.
Make use of a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the morning and post sunset times - you'll require an extended exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't occur.
Then, utilize the mirror lockup feature in case your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.
For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a shutter release that is timed. It might appear like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference.
Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so on.
Another compositional element to consider is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most important component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place the horizon in the upper third.
They're uncommon, while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Make sure you have a special reason to do this!
Last but not least... Be sure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Make certain you stress that feature and drive the audience's focus to it. Don't make the blunder of trying to make the whole scene equally significant. You need a star.
