Landscape Photography Hints

Now we'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photos and you'll begin winning photo contests! It's nearly a given!

We talked about light yesterday.

First we discussed the color of light... You have to get up early in the morning and begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak. AND you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.

At those times there's a happening we'll call a 'fictitious' sunrise and sunset that can create some absolutely stunning colors in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates a lot of shadows that highlight and define their muscles.

At twilight and dawn, the glancing light from the sun is at the best angle to make lots of darkness that are defining. This will add your photographs and lots of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both dusk and morning, then compare the outcomes to the exact same scene shot at noon. You may never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky shooting. This can add a lot of visual interest to the scene - in addition to lots of color. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is poor... Get out there! That is the time you'll get the top shots.

Today, let's add a couple more landscape photography tips and techniques.

Use a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, particularly in the predawn - you will need a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of trying to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.

Afterward, utilize the mirror lockup feature if your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a significant change, although it may seem like a little overkill.

As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to attract the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional component to consider is the horizon, make it level! What is the most crucial element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Put in the upper third.

They're rare while there are times that setting the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Be sure you have a certain reason to do so!

Last but not least... Make fully sure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Make certain you accentuate that feature and drive the viewer's attention to it. Don't make the blunder of attempting to make the whole scene equally important. You need a star.
