Landscape Photography Strategies

We will continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints now. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photos and you will begin winning photo contests! It's practically a given!

Yesterday we talked about light.

First we discussed the color of light... You must get up early in the morning and begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND you also have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.

At those times there is a phenomenon we'll call a 'fictitious' sunrise and sundown that may create some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates plenty of shadows that accentuate and define their muscles.

At daybreak and dusk, the glancing light from the sun is right at an ideal angle to make a great deal of shadows that are defining. This will definitely add a great deal of third dimensionality to your photographs and make them come alive!

Attempt shooting the same scene at both dusk and morning, then compare the outcomes to the exact same scene shot at midday. You will never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky shooting. This will add a lot of visual interest to the scene - in addition to plenty of colour. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is bad... Get out there! That's the time you'll get the best shots.

Today, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the morning and post sunset times - you will need a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It will not occur.

If your camera has one, then, make use of the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a significant change, although it may seem like a little overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to attract the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What is the most crucial component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Put the horizon in the upper third.

They're uncommon while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the right call. Make sure you are in possession of a certain reason to do so!

Last but not least... Make fully sure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Make sure you accentuate that feature and drive the viewer's focus to it. Don't make the mistake of trying to make the whole scene equally significant. You need a star.
