Composition - The Heart of the Photo

Composition is the spirit of the photo. Composition results in the work of art that starts from inspiration. Inspiration begins when you free the spirit to have the universe around you and disconnect with the internal battles of everyday life. Actually being in the moment and experiencing nature links you with all around you.

It may sound like meditation, but knowledge of your surroundings without interference of outside thoughts clears the mind and sharpening your senses. Images seem where you didn't see them. The components begin to art and align appears.

Joseph Cornell in his novel 'Listening to Nature How to Deepen Your Awareness of Nature' had this exercise. Walk into an area which you'd like to photograph. Rather than shooting and setting up the camera. Sit down. Wait. Relax. Be still and feel the second. Really quietly become aware of nature. The Native Americans called this 'silent hunting'. You personally will be spoken to by nature, but you have to be quiet. Nature speaks gently. Nature will reveal herself to you, in case you are patient. And incredible pictures will appear.

There are numerous times that I've entered the woods with camera in hand and not found anything that I wanted to photograph. It may be that I wasn't ready or nature didn't wish to reveal herself. That day, maybe she didn't feel photogenic. Other days, scenes appear as if by magic. If you can not find anything to shoot on any specified day so do not be disappointed. Use that time to scout the place for future chances and revel in the truth that you've got a chance to be outdoors.

Take this as an opportunity to plan for future shots. At these times believe, what if the light was coming from another way. Coming back in the early morning or late day may create a better image. Seasons change the landscape. Maybe shooting in the fall, together with the leaf in brilliant colors, or winter with a fresh layer of snow would create the photo that you would like.

Don't hurry yourself when seeking that image. Time with nature is a pleasure all by its self. The sheer pleasure of being one with the outside is worth the encounter, should you not find anything to shoot.

For today's photo trick, lets chat a little about landscape photography tips and techniques. Many people haven't really tried using them, although this is going to be a review of matters we've discussed before. Place it as a target for this particular weekend to get out there and use these landscape photography tips and techniques to create something you can take pride in!

Light - with a portrait, we've got total control. We can adjust the light levels, we can set our light where we desire, we can put modifiers in front of it - like umbrellas, scrims, diffusion material, gobos and so on... We may do pretty much anything we need to get the image our mind has conjured up!

With cityscape and landscape photography, we're pretty much stuck with what nature provides us. There's not much we can do.

Or is there? With some preplanning, we can almost guarantee a stunning shot!

In an outside, landscape setting, there's not much we can do to alter or fix the light, but we can become hyper aware of what light does at various times of day - and in various weather conditions.

First and foremost to be successful as a landscape or cityscape photographer - you must have a urge to lose sleep.

What am I talking about? Glad you asked! There's really only two times of day to shoot, in the event you intend to start getting those spectacular landscape pictures with all the gorgeous colours - at dusk and at morning.

But for a photographer, dawn and dusk are a bit more expanded than you are perhaps thinking. About twenty minutes before the sun first peeks over the horizon in the morning there is a 'false' daybreak. This time of day will give you those intense cobalt blue colours you see in contest winners, but have not been able to find in nature!

As the sun gets closer and closer to the horizon, the colors will start to get pinker. The colors you see at morning are NOT the same as the colors you see at sunset. (They're more red and orange.)

Thus, pull yourself out of bed a couple hours before morning so you will have enough time to grab a cup of coffee (so you are conscious enough to focus) and make your way to your predetermined area, get set up and begin shooting during the false dawn.

See what I mean about needing a desire to reduce sleep? Here's the good thing, most of your pals and camera club competition will probably be snoring away while you 'get the shot!'

By the way, there is a sundown that is fictitious about 20 minutes following the sun goes down. You're not spending that time watching TV are you?

Along with the terrific colors, you also get excellent light angles!

Consider the last photo you saw of a body builder... Where was the light? I'd venture to guess that it was to the side. Actually about 90 degrees to the camera - model axis.

This glancing side light causes heavy shadowing around the muscles making them seem larger and really more defined. The light causes some specular highlights also - which makes the difference between shadow and highlight even more striking.

Now think of your cityscape or your landscape as a model that is muscle bound. The shadows due to the glancing sun will help define and highlight the forms.

Next appearance for an interesting scene! Use foreground components to draw the eye into the photo. Utilize the rule of thirds, leading lines, diagonals and other compositional methods to draw the observer's eye to the 'star' of your photo. (Be sure you have a well defined 'star!')

Finally, throw in a couple of clouds to reflect the sun's colors and add some visual interest to the sky and you will be well on your own approach to winning photo competitions!

Do all of this at daybreak - then do a picture of the exact same scene at noon. Finally, do it at sundown and compare all your results. I think you will quickly start to realize just how significant rules, techniques and all the photo tips we have been discussing really are!

Make a note of these landscape photography hints and techniques, and make it a goal to UTILIZE THEM this weekend! Check back tomorrow for more...
