Landscape Photography Tips

We'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints now. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will begin winning photo contests! It is nearly a given!

We talked about light yesterday.

First we discussed the shade of light... Begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn and you must get up early in the morning. AND also you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.

At those times there is a phenomenon we'll call a 'bogus' dawn and sundown that can produce some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the subject. This creates plenty of shadows that accentuate and define their muscles.

At daybreak and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is right at the best angle to make a great deal of darkness that are defining. This can add a lot of third dimensionality to your photos and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both dusk and morning, then compare the outcomes to exactly the same scene shot at midday. You will never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky shooting. This will add lots of visual interest to the scene - in addition to lots of color. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is bad... Get out there! That is certainly the time you will receive the very best shots.

Now, let us add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the predawn and post sunset times - you will need an extended exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.

Afterward, use the mirror lockup feature in case your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a major difference, although it might seem like a bit of overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional component to consider is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most crucial element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place in the upper third.

While there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the correct call, they are uncommon. Make sure you have a particular reason to do this!

Last but not least... Ensure that your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Make certain you emphasize that characteristic and drive the audience's attention to it. Don't make the blunder of attempting to make the entire scene equally significant. You need a star.
