Landscape Photography Techniques

Today we will continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will start winning photo competitions! It's practically a given!

Yesterday we talked about light.

First we discussed the shade of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn and you have to get up early in the morning. AND you need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.

At those times there's a phenomenon we will call a 'false' sunrise and sunset that could produce some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photos. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates lots of shadows that emphasize and define their muscles.

At twilight and daybreak, the glancing light from the sun is at an ideal angle to make a great deal of darkness that are defining. This can add your photographs and a great deal of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Attempt shooting the same scene at both dawn and dusk, then compare the results to the exact same scene shot at noon. You will never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky shooting. This will add lots of visual interest to the scene - in addition to lots of shade. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is lousy... Get out there! That's the time you will receive the top shots.

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, particularly in the morning and post sunset times - you'll require a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field demands shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.

Then, use the mirror lockup feature in case your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a shutter release that is timed. It might appear like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a major difference.

As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What is the most crucial component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place the horizon in the upper third.

While there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the correct call, they're uncommon. Be sure to are in possession of a specific reason to do so!

Last but not least... Make fully sure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Be sure you accent that attribute and drive the viewer's attention to it. Do not make the error of trying to make the whole scene equally important. You will need a star.
