Landscape Photography Photo Tip - Get Better Sunset Photography With Silhouettes!
Today's landscape photography photo trick will continue our discussion of how to create beautiful sunset photography.
Previously, we found the pretty colours aren't enough. A winning sunset photo wants a star. Now let us add silhouettes to get better sunset photography.
In previous articles, we have mentioned that the star could be an intriguing palm tree, a seagull flying by... basically anything! The gorgeous colours are the backdrop to our star, not the focus of the photo.
But (as in our routine non sundown landscape photos) the best star is a man! People like looking at folks! You'll get the viewer more readily engaged in a photo - any photo - where there are individuals being shown.
In a sunset photograph there is two ways to add an individual. In silhouette showing no element and normally showing full detail.
Today's sunset photography photo trick will discuss including a silhouetted man. Or really anything - the principles are valid regardless of what your 'star' is. Done well, the outcome may be one of the very exquisite pictures you may really ever create.

When adding a silhouette, the essential component to keep in mind is that you're adding a contour, not a person (or bird or tree). Your shape will probably be pure black with no detail.
In sundown photography, getting the black contour that is pure with no detail is actually quite easy. In our previous discussions, we've learned that if we take our meter readings from the sky - everything else in our sunset photo is going to go black. Ta-daaa!
Formerly, our concern was to bring detail into the spaces that are dark - now we only have them go dark.
The first step would be to meter from the sky, not the man so to put in a silhouette. Your camera will make a powerful attempt at setting an exposure to show detail in the event that you meter from the person.
To put it differently, you must take the camera off automatic - meter for the sky and then re-compose to put your 'star' in the correct place in the photo.
The second concern we've got in adding a silhouette is in fact harder to get right.
Don't forget, you are adding a contour and everything but the sky is black with no detail. Including the ground. When you add your shape, it has to 'read' right.
By 'read' I mean that when someone looks at your photo, they must certanly manage to immediately tell what it is. In case your subject is standing in front of another thing, like a palm tree, stone or whatever - the (black with no detail) shapes will mix together and distort the image.

This notion is hard to put in words but easy to comprehend. I am sure you've observed photos where the shapes blended together and neither seems appropriate. An individual who has a palm tree growing out of their head, a palm tree using a seagull's wing sticking out of the trunk and so on...
Be sure that there is nothing intersecting with your silhouetted contour.
This comprises the ground... Frequently I see shapes where the top half of the version is in silhouette but the bottom half is lost in the ground. You may have to shoot up at your star from a slightly lower vantage point to avert this sort of blending.
The 3rd factor to contemplate is the shape itself! Not only do you have to be careful for your silhouette not reading accurately because it blends with others, it can combine with itself too! Arms crossing in front of the body or hanging (with no openings) along the sides, legs together and so on.
The pose is vital, to get an effective silhouette! Even more so than in a usual photo of this person. The fact that she is a pretty girl doesn't matter in this situation. In a shape, no one is going in order to tell what she looks like.
Consider photo examples out of magazines and color them with a black magic marker. Would that model 'read' and be successful if that was all you could see of the person?
Other garments and hats could radically change the shape and appear odd in silhouette. It might look like a tiara in the wedding pictures, but in silhouette, it looks like devil's horns sticking from her head.
Study various find several you may use when you're making silhouettes and poses for their contours. When the situation arises, so that you will always have them at hand, add them to your laptop.
Shapes are not just successful in sunset photography, but at weddings. Pose the couple in silhouette in front of a stained glass window for example. Or in the doorway of the church from outdoor silhouetting them with all the light.
Training today's landscape photography photo tip on how best to get better sundown photography by including shapes. There are numerous times when a silhouette is just the thing you need to distinguish you from the gang, its worth learning the way to do them nicely. A
