Today's landscape photography photo suggestion will continue our discussion of the way to create stunning sunset photography.

Previously, we found the pretty colours aren't enough. A winning sunset photo needs a star. Now let us add silhouettes to get better sunset photography.

In previous articles, we have mentioned that the star might be an intriguing palm tree, a seagull flying by... essentially anything! The magnificent colors are the backdrop to our star, not the focus of the photo.

But (as in our regular non sundown landscape pictures) the most effective star is a person! People like looking at folks! You will receive the viewer more readily participated in a photo - any photo - where there are individuals being revealed.

In a sunset photograph there's two ways to add a man. In shape showing no aspect and generally showing complete detail.

Today's sundown photography photo tip will discuss adding a silhouetted person. Or really anything - the principles are valid no matter what your 'star' is. Done well, the result can be one of the most exquisite photographs you may ever create.

When adding a silhouette, the key component to keep in mind is that you are adding a contour, not a person (or bird or tree). Your contour will soon be pure black with no detail.

In sundown photography, getting the black contour that is pure free of detail is actually quite easy. In our previous discussions, we have learned that if we take our meter readings from the sky - everything else in our sundown photo is going to go black. Ta-daaa!

Previously, our concern was to bring detail into the dark areas - now we just let them go dark.

So to add a silhouette, the initial step would be to meter from the sky, not the man. Your camera is likely to make a powerful effort at setting an exposure to reveal detail in case you meter from the individual.

To put it differently, you have to take the camera off automatic - meter for the sky and then re-compose to put your 'star' in the right position in the photo.

Easy.

In including a silhouette, the second concern we have is actually more challenging to get right.

Remember, you're adding a contour and everything but the sky is black with no detail. Including the ground. When you add your shape, it's to 'read' right.

By 'read' I mean that when someone looks at your photo, they must be able to immediately tell what it is. In case your subject is standing in front of some other item, like a palm tree, rock or whatever - the (black with no detail) shapes will mix together and distort the image.

This idea is hard to place in words but simple to comprehend. I'm sure you have observed photographs where the silhouettes blended together and neither looks right. A person with a palm tree growing out of their head, a palm tree with a seagull's wing sticking out of the trunk and so on...

Be sure that there is nothing currently intersecting with your silhouetted contour.

This comprises the ground... The bottom half is lost in the ground although often I see silhouettes where the top half of the version is in silhouette. You may have to shoot up at your star from a vantage point that is slightly lower to avoid this kind of blending.

The 3rd factor to contemplate is the shape itself! Not only do you have to watch out for your shape not reading accurately because it combines with others, it can combine with itself also! Arms crossing in front of the body or hanging (with no gaps) along the sides, legs together and so on.

The pose is crucial to get an effective shape! Even more so than in a normal photo of the man. The very fact that she is a pretty girl does not matter in this event. In a shape, no one is definitely going to be able to tell what she looks like.

Consider photo examples out of magazines and color them with a black magic marker. Would that pose 'read' and be powerful if that was all you could see of the person?

Hats and appear odd in silhouette and other garments could drastically alter the shape. In shape, it looks like demon's horns sticking out of her head, although it might look as a tiara in the wedding pictures.

Study various find several you may use when you are making silhouettes and poses for their contours. So that you'll always have them at hand when the situation arises, add them to your notebook.

Silhouettes are not just successful in sunset photography, but at weddings. Model the couple in shape in front of a stained glass window for example. Or at the door of the church from outside silhouetting them together with the light.

Practice today's landscape photography photo hint on what steps to take to to get better sunset photography by including shapes. There are numerous times when a silhouette is just the thing you must distinguish you from the group, its worth learning the best way to do them nicely. A
