Landscape Photography Techniques

Now we will continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will start winning photo contests! It's practically a given!

We discussed light yesterday.

First we discussed the colour of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak and you have to get up early in the morning. AND also you need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.

At those times there's a phenomenon we will call a 'bogus' sunrise and sundown that can create some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the subject. This creates plenty of shadows that define their muscles and accent.

At daybreak and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is right at the right angle to create lots of shadows that are defining. This will add your pictures and a great deal of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Attempt shooting the same scene at both twilight and morning, then compare the outcomes to exactly the same scene shot at midday. You'll never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This will add lots of visual interest to the scene - as well as a lot of colour. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is awful... Get out there! That's the time you will get the top shots.

Today, let's add a couple more landscape photography tips and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, particularly in the daybreak and post sunset times - you'll require a long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field necessitates shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.

In case your camera has one, subsequently, make use of the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a shutter release that is timed. These sharpness techniques can and do make a significant difference, although it might seem like a bit of overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What is the most crucial component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Set the horizon in the upper third.

They're uncommon, while there are times that placing the horizon in the middle is the right call. Be sure you have a certain reason to do that!

Last but not least... Ensure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Be sure that characteristic is accented by you and drive the viewer's attention to it. Do not make the blunder of trying to make the entire scene equally important. You need a star.
