Landscape Photography Techniques

Today we'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography tips. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photos and you will start winning photo competitions! It is almost a given!

We discussed light yesterday.

First we discussed the color of light... You have to get up early in the morning and start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.

At those times there is a happening we'll call a 'false' sunrise and sunset that could produce some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates plenty of shadows that define their muscles and accent.

At dusk and dawn, the glancing light from the sun is right at the perfect angle to produce a great deal of darkness that are defining. This will definitely add a great deal of third dimensionality to your photos and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both twilight and dawn, then compare the results to the same scene shot at noon. You will never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky shooting. This will add lots of visual interest to the scene - in addition to plenty of color. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is bad... Get out there! That's the time you will receive the top shots.

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Utilize a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the daybreak and post sunset times - you will need a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field necessitates shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of trying to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't occur.

In case your camera has one, subsequently, use the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a shutter release that is timed. It might seem like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a significant difference.

Pay attention to the foreground as far as composition is concerned! Use it to attract on the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most crucial element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, set on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Set in the upper third.

While there are times that placing the horizon in the middle is the correct call, they're rare. Be sure you are in possession of a special reason to do so!

Last but not least... Make fully sure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Be sure you stress that feature and drive the audience's focus to it. Do not make the mistake of trying to make the entire scene equally significant. You need a star.
