Landscape Photography Guidelines

We'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography tips now. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will start winning photo competitions! It is nearly a given!

We talked about light yesterday.

First we discussed the color of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak and you have to get up early in the morning. AND you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.

At those times there is a happening we'll call a 'bogus' sunrise and sunset that can produce some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates lots of shadows that define their muscles and accentuate.

At dawn and dusk, the glancing light from the sun is at the right angle to produce plenty of darkness that are defining. This can add your pictures and a lot of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both dusk and morning, then compare the outcomes to the exact same scene shot at midday. You'll never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This can add plenty of visual interest to the scene - as well as a lot of color. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is lousy... Get out there! That's the time you'll get the top shots.

If you're searching to have a Canon or Nikon Camera in Oregon, California you shouldn't forget to consider eBay for excellent selections and hard to beat prices

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography tips and techniques.

Make use of a tripod! When shooting landscapes, particularly in the predawn and post sunset times - you will need a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field necessitates shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of trying to get a competition winner by shooting handheld. It will not happen.

If your camera has one, afterward, use the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a major change, although it might appear like a bit of overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to consider is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most important element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Set the horizon in the upper third.

They are rare while there are times that setting the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Be sure you have a certain reason to do that!

Last but not least... Make sure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Make certain that attribute is accented by you and drive the viewer's focus to it. Don't make the blunder of trying to make the whole scene equally significant. You'll need a star.
