Landscape Photography Techniques
Today we'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography tips. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photos and you will begin winning photo competitions! It's nearly a given!
We discussed light yesterday.
First we discussed the shade of light... You need to get up early in the morning and start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak. AND you need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.
At those times there's a phenomenon we will call a 'fictitious' dawn and sundown that could create some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photographs.
Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the subject. This creates a lot of shadows that define their muscles and accentuate.
At twilight and daybreak, the glancing light from the sun is at the right angle to produce plenty of darkness that are defining. This will add your photographs and a great deal of third dimensionality and make them come alive!
Attempt shooting the same scene at both dusk and dawn, then compare the results to the same scene shot at noon. You will never sleep in again!
Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This will add lots of visual interest to the scene - as well as plenty of colour. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is awful... Get out there! That's the time you'll get the best shots.

Today, let us add a couple more landscape photography tips and techniques.
Utilize a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, especially in the predawn - you'll require an extended exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field demands shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It will not occur.
If your camera has one, subsequently, make use of the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.
For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a shutter release that is timed. It may seem like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a big change.
Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so forth.
Another compositional component to consider is the horizon, make it level! What is the most important element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Set in the upper third.
While there are times that setting the horizon in the middle is the correct call, they're uncommon. Make sure you are in possession of a specific reason to do so!
Last but not least... Make sure that your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Be sure you emphasize that characteristic and drive the audience's attention to it. Don't make the blunder of trying to make the entire scene equally important. You need a star.
