Landscape Photography Tips
We'll continue our review of landscape photography hints and techniques now. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photos and you'll start winning photo contests! It's almost a given!
Yesterday we discussed light.
First we discussed the color of light... You need to get up early in the morning and begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND you need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sundown.
At those times there's a phenomenon we will call a 'false' sunrise and sunset that could create some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photos.
Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photos. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates plenty of shadows that emphasize and define their muscles.
At daybreak and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is right at an ideal angle to create a great deal of defining darkness. This will add a lot of third dimensionality to your photos and make them come alive!
Try shooting the same scene at both dawn and dusk, then compare the results to exactly the same scene shot at midday. You will never sleep in again!
Next we mentioned shooting when there are clouds in the sky. This will add a lot of visual interest to the scene - as well as lots of color. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is poor... Get out there! That's the time you will get the top shots.

Today, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.
Make use of a tripod! When shooting landscapes, particularly in the morning and post sunset times - you will require a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a competition winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.
Afterward, use the mirror lockup feature in case your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.
For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, make use of a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference, although it might appear like a bit of overkill.
Pay attention to the foreground as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so on.
Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What's the most crucial element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, set the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Put the horizon in the upper third.
They are rare, while there are times that placing the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Be sure you have a particular reason to do that!
Last but not least... Be sure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Be sure that feature is accented by you and drive the audience's attention to it. Do not make the mistake of trying to make the whole scene equally significant. You will need a star.
