Landscape Photography Tips
We'll continue our review of landscape photography hints and techniques today. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photos and you will begin winning photo contests! It is almost a given!
Yesterday we discussed light.
First we discussed the color of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn and you have to get up early in the morning. AND also you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.
At those times there's a happening we'll call a 'bogus' dawn and sundown that can create some absolutely stunning colours in your landscape and cityscape photographs.
Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the subject. This creates plenty of shadows that highlight and define their muscles.
At daybreak and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is right at the perfect angle to generate lots of shadows that are defining. This will add your photographs and a great deal of third dimensionality and make them come alive!
Try shooting the same scene at both dusk and dawn, then compare the results to the same scene shot at noon. You'll never sleep in again!
Next we mentioned shooting when there are clouds in the sky. This will add plenty of visual interest to the scene - as well as a lot of color. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is awful... Get out there! That's the time you will receive the very best shots.

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.
Make use of a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, especially in the daybreak - you will require an extended exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of trying to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.
If your camera has one, subsequently, use the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.
For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a major difference, although it might seem like a little overkill.
Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to attract on the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so forth.
Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What's the most important component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, set the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Put the horizon in the upper third.
While there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the right call, they're uncommon. Be sure to have a specific reason to do so!
Last but not least... Ensure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Be sure you accent that attribute and drive the audience's attention to it. Don't make the blunder of attempting to make the entire scene equally important. You need a star.
