We talked about light.

First we discussed the color of light... You have to get up early in the morning and start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak. AND you also need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.

At those times there's a happening we will call a 'fictitious' sunrise and sundown that may create some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates a lot of shadows that accentuate and define their muscles.

At daybreak and dusk, the glancing light from the sun is right at an ideal angle to make a lot of defining darkness. This will definitely add your photographs and a lot of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both twilight and dawn, then compare the results to exactly the same scene shot at midday. You may never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky shooting. This can add plenty of visual interest to the scene - in addition to plenty of color. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is awful... Get out there! That is the time you will get the best shots.

Today, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Utilize a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, especially in the predawn - you'll require a long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field requires shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of attempting to get a competition winner by shooting handheld. It won't occur.

If your camera has one, afterward, use the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a shutter release that is timed. It might appear like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a significant difference.

Pay attention to the foreground as far as composition is concerned! Use it to attract on the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so on.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What is the most crucial element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, set on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Put the horizon in the upper third.

They are rare while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Be sure to are in possession of a specific reason to do so!

Last but not least... Be sure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Be sure that feature is accented by you and drive the viewer's attention to it. Do not make the blunder of attempting to make the entire scene equally significant. You'll need a star.
