Composition - The Heart of the Photo

Composition is the spirit of the photo. Composition results in the work of art that starts from inspiration. Inspiration begins when you free the spirit to have the world around you and disconnect together with the internal battles of everyday life. Actually being in the moment and experiencing nature links you with all around you.

It might sound like meditation, but awareness of your surroundings without interference of outside thoughts clears the mind and sharpening your senses. Images seem where you did not see them before. The components start to art and align emerges.

Joseph Cornell in his book 'Listening to Nature How to Deepen Your Awareness of Nature' had this exercise. Walk into a place that you would like to photograph. Instead of shooting and setting the camera up. Sit down. Wait. Relax. Be still and feel the minute. Quite quietly become conscious of nature. The Native Americans called this 'quiet hunting'. You will be spoken to by nature, but you have to be quiet. Nature speaks softly. Nature will reveal herself to you if you're patient. And incredible images will appear.

There are many times that I've entered the woods with camera in hand and not found anything that I wanted to photograph. It could be that I was not ready or nature did not wish to show herself. Perhaps she didn't feel photogenic that day. Other days, scenes appear as if by magic. So don't be disappointed if you can not find anything to shoot on any specified day. Use that time to scout the place for future chances and revel in the truth that you've got an opportunity to be outdoors.

Take this as a chance to plan for future shots. At these times believe, what if the light was coming from an alternate direction. Coming back in the early morning or late afternoon may generate a better image. Seasons alter the landscape. Maybe shooting together with the leaves in brilliant colors, in the fall, or winter with a fresh layer of snow would create the photo that you desire.

When seeking that image, do not rush yourself. Time with nature is a joy all by its self. The absolute enjoyment of being one with the outside is worth the encounter, if you don't find anything to shoot.

Composition - Ten Tips And Methods for Astonishing Results

Composition does not come naturally to many photographers. Some say that composition CAn't although the technical aspects can be learned. Photography is an art form and does demand some natural ability although I do not believe this to be entirely true.

So what can I do, my composition stinks? Composition is subjective so there will always be someone out there who likes you work regardless of how poor you may think it's. Most non-photographers aren't that discerning but to capture really great shots composition is key. A nicely composed photograph simply works, it's rather clear-cut but it is more a feeling than conforming to a set of rules.

Here are some composition tricks to remember next time you go out to shoot. Keep them at hand and see if they work for you.

1. A painter picks what to include in a painting, a photographer must choose what to exclude. Declutter compositions by particular framing removing unneeded components. Use your legs, walk about trying to find alternative compositions and use the cameras zoom to control what exclude and more importantly, you wish to contain.

2. The 'rule of thirds' is a famous compositional practice but does not necessarily need to be strictly adhered to. The rule orders that the main elements that make up the image should fall on or near imaginary vertical or horizontal thirds.

3. Assess your horizon. For me the horizon should only ever be totally flat. Make use of the top of the window in the view finder as a benchmark. I frequently point the camera down to align the horizon before re-composing.

4. Don't leave large empty spaces. Leaving large holes in the composition like uninteresting expanses of water or dark or very bright components should be prevented. Alter outlook by shortening the tripod legs to compress big openings in the mid to close foreground. Conversely elements should not be cluttered, lift the height of the camera to increase the space between components.

5. Before settling on two or three compositions to shoot, take a walk. Take care to refine them instead of shooting anything and everything.

6. Make both background and the foreground interesting.

7. Use leading lines for example stone formations or movement in water to lead the eye into the framework.

8. Assess the edges of the frame for any distracting elements (half a tree, breaks in clouds etc.), and recompose if required. Be sure you have the ability to focus the audience's attention to the subject and try not to distract them away from it. Ask yourself, 'what's this image about?'

9. Try and keep compositions balanced to some degree where potential. A protruding headland or building can upset the balance, remove it and look for an option composition.

10. Practice, their pictures are composed by critically reviewing your own work and looking at just how other photographers. Take a look at this landscape photographer for a beginning.

Above all, get out there and appreciate, exploration of composition is a constant learning curve.
