DSLR Suggestions For Nelma Wisconsin

Landscape Photography Points

Today we'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography tips. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will begin winning photo competitions! It is nearly a given!

We talked about light yesterday.

First we discussed the colour of light... You need to get up early in the morning and begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND you also have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.

At those times there's a happening we'll call a 'fictitious' dawn and sunset that can create some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates lots of shadows that accent and define their muscles.

At daybreak and dusk, the glancing light from the sun is at an ideal angle to generate plenty of defining darkness. This will definitely add your pictures and a lot of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both morning and dusk, then compare the results to the exact same scene shot at noon. You will never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned shooting when there are clouds in the sky. This will add a great deal of visual interest to the scene - as well as plenty of shade. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is poor... Get out there! That is certainly the time you'll get the top shots.

Now, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Utilize a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the predawn and post sunset times - you will require a long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field requires shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of trying to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It will not occur.

If your camera has one, afterward, utilize the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a shutter release that is timed. These sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference, although it might appear like a bit of overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground, as far as composition is concerned! Use it to attract on the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most important component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Set in the upper third.

They are uncommon, while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the right call. Be sure you are in possession of a certain reason to do that!

Last but not least... Make sure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Be sure you accentuate that feature and drive the audience's focus to it. Do not make the mistake of attempting to make the whole scene equally significant. You need a star.
