Landscape Photography Suggestions

We'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints now. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photos and you will begin winning photo competitions! It is almost a given!

We talked about light.

First we discussed the shade of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before daybreak and you need to get up early in the morning. AND you also have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sundown.

At those times there's a happening we'll call a 'bogus' sunrise and sunset that can produce some absolutely stunning colors in your landscape and cityscape photos.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates a lot of shadows that define their muscles and highlight.

At daybreak and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is at the best angle to make a great deal of defining shadows. This will add your photographs and lots of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Attempt shooting the same scene at both dawn and twilight, then compare the outcomes to the exact same scene shot at noon. You may never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This will add a lot of visual interest to the scene - in addition to a lot of colour. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is awful... Get out there! That is certainly the time you will receive the best shots.

Now, let us add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, particularly in the daybreak and post sunset times - you'll need a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Do not even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It will not occur.

If your camera has one, subsequently, make use of the mirror lockup feature. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a shutter release that is timed. It might appear like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a major difference.

As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to attract the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional component to consider is the horizon, make it level! What's the most crucial component in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place the horizon in the upper third.

While there are times that setting the horizon in the middle is the right call, they're rare. Be sure to are in possession of a certain reason to do this!

Last but not least... Make sure that your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Make certain you accentuate that characteristic and drive the audience's attention to it. Do not make the error of attempting to make the entire scene equally significant. You require a star.
