Landscape Photography Suggestions

We will continue our review of techniques and landscape photography tips now. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will begin winning photo contests! It is nearly a given!

Yesterday we discussed light.

First we discussed the shade of light... You must get up early in the morning and begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sundown.

At those times there is a happening we'll call a 'false' sunrise and sundown that could create some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates plenty of shadows that define their muscles and emphasize.

At dusk and daybreak, the glancing light from the sun is at the perfect angle to make plenty of shadows that are defining. This can add your photographs and a lot of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both morning and dusk, then compare the results to the same scene shot at midday. You may never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This can add a great deal of visual interest to the scene - as well as a lot of colour. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is awful... Get out there! That is the time you'll get the very best shots.

Today, let us add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the morning and post sunset times - you'll need a long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of trying to get a competition winner by shooting handheld. It won't occur.

Then, use the mirror lockup feature in case your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a shutter release that is timed. It might seem like a little overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference.

As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to attract on the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional component to think about is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most important element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place in the upper third.

They're uncommon, while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the right call. Be sure you are in possession of a certain reason to do that!

Last but not least... Make sure that your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Make sure that feature is accented by you and drive the viewer's focus to it. Do not make the blunder of trying to make the entire scene equally important. You will need a star.
