Landscape Photography Tips And Hints

We'll continue our review of landscape photography hints and techniques now. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you'll begin winning photo competitions! It's almost a given!

We talked about light.

First we discussed the color of light... You need to get up early in the morning and start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND you need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sundown.

At those times there is a phenomenon we'll call a 'fictitious' sunrise and sunset that could produce some absolutely beautiful colors in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photos. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the discipline. This creates a lot of shadows that highlight and define their muscles.

At dawn and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is right at the right angle to create a great deal of shadows that are defining. This will add your photographs and a lot of third dimensionality and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both dusk and dawn, then compare the outcomes to exactly the same scene shot at noon. You'll never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned shooting when there are clouds in the sky. This will add a great deal of visual interest to the scene - in addition to lots of colour. Now the setting or rising sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is lousy... Get out there! That is the time you'll get the best shots.

Today, let's add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, especially in the predawn - you will need an extended exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It will not occur.

Subsequently, make use of the mirror lockup feature if your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, utilize a timed shutter release. It might seem like a little overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference.

As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to draw the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so on.

Another compositional component to think about is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most important element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, set the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place in the upper third.

While there are times that placing the horizon in the middle is the right call, they're rare. Make sure you have a particular reason to do that!

Last but not least... Make sure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Make sure that attribute is accented by you and drive the viewer's attention to it. Do not make the error of trying to make the entire scene equally significant. You will need a star.
