Landscape Photography Points

Today we will continue our review of techniques and landscape photography tips. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will start winning photo competitions! It is nearly a given!

Yesterday we discussed light.

First we discussed the colour of light... You have to get up early in the morning and begin shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND also you have to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.

At those times there is a happening we will call a 'fictitious' dawn and sunset that could produce some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates plenty of shadows that define their muscles and accentuate.

At dusk and dawn, the glancing light from the sun is right at an ideal angle to produce a great deal of defining shadows. This will add a lot of third dimensionality to your photos and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both dawn and dusk, then compare the results to exactly the same scene shot at midday. You may never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned shooting when there are clouds in the sky. This will add plenty of visual interest to the scene - in addition to plenty of color. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is poor... Get out there! That is certainly the time you will get the best shots.

Now, let us add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! Post sunset times and when shooting landscapes, particularly in the predawn - you'll require a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field demands shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It will not occur.

Afterward, use the mirror lockup feature if your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, make use of a timed shutter release. It might seem like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference.

As far as composition is concerned, pay attention to the foreground! Use it to attract on the audience's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What is the most important element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Put in the upper third.

They are rare, while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Be sure to are in possession of a specific reason to do this!

Last but not least... Ensure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Be sure you stress that characteristic and drive the viewer's focus to it. Don't make the mistake of attempting to make the entire scene equally important. You will need a star.
