Landscape Photography Points

We'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints now. Add these suggestions to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you will begin winning photo competitions! It's nearly a given!

We discussed light yesterday.

First we discussed the shade of light... Start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn and you have to get up early in the morning. AND you need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so previous sunset.

At those times there is a phenomenon we'll call a 'false' dawn and sundown that can create some absolutely stunning colors in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Think of bodybuilder photographs. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the subject. This creates plenty of shadows that define their muscles and accentuate.

At twilight and daybreak, the glancing light from the sun is at the right angle to produce a lot of darkness that are defining. This will definitely add a great deal of third dimensionality to your photographs and make them come alive!

Try shooting the same scene at both morning and dusk, then compare the results to the exact same scene shot at noon. You'll never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned shooting when there are clouds in the sky. This will definitely add plenty of visual interest to the scene - in addition to plenty of shade. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the current weather is awful... Get out there! That is the time you will receive the best shots.

Now, let us add a couple more landscape photography tips and techniques.

Utilize a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the predawn and post sunset times - you will require a very long exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field needs shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of trying to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't occur.

Then, use the mirror lockup feature if your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the best in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, use a timed shutter release. These sharpness techniques can and do make a big difference, although it may seem like a little overkill.

Pay attention to the foreground as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to consider is the horizon, make it level! What is the most important element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, put on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place in the upper third.

They're uncommon while there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the correct call. Make sure you are in possession of a specific reason to do that!

Last but not least... Make fully sure your photo has a 'star'. What attracted you to the scene? Make certain that attribute is accented by you and drive the audience's attention to it. Do not make the blunder of attempting to make the entire scene equally significant. You will need a star.
