Composition - The Core of the Photo

Composition is the core of the photo. Composition results in the work of art that begins from inspiration. Inspiration begins when you disconnect with the domestic struggles of everyday life and free the spirit to have the world around you. Truly being in the moment and experiencing nature links you with all around you.

Knowledge of your surroundings without hindrance of external thoughts clears the mind, although it might seem like meditation and sharpening your perceptions. Pictures seem where you did not see them. The components start to art and align emerges.

Joseph Cornell in his novel 'Listening to Nature How to Deepen Your Awareness of Nature' had this exercise. Walk into an area that you would like to photograph. Instead of setting the camera up and shooting. Sit down. Wait. Relax. Be still and sense the moment. Quite softly become aware of nature. The Native Americans called this 'silent hunting'. Nature will speak to you personally, but you should be quiet. Nature speaks softly. Nature will show herself to you if you are patient. And unbelievable pictures will appear.

There are lots of times that I have entered the woods with camera in hand and not found anything that I wanted to photograph. It could be that I wasn't prepared or nature did not need to show herself. That day, perhaps she did not feel photogenic. Scenes appear as if by magic, other days. If you can't find anything to shoot on any given day, so don't be disappointed. Use that time to scout the place for future opportunities and revel in the fact that you've got an opportunity to be outdoors.

Choose this as the opportunity to plan for future shots. At these times think, what if the light was coming from an alternate direction. A better image may be produced by coming back in the early morning or late afternoon. The landscape changes. Perhaps shooting in the autumn, together with the leaves in brilliant colours, or winter with a fresh layer of snow would create the photo that you want.

When seeking that image, don't rush yourself. Time with nature is a delight all by its self. If you don't find anything to shoot, the sheer happiness of being one with the outdoors is worth the experience.

To assist anyone that is curious I've recorded a number of tips below on what is required to shoot during the nighttime. I've been getting a little into night landscape photography of late. Last night I had lots of fun with some fellow photos playing with different coloured lights to produce effects that we can't record with ordinary human eyesight. Long exposures open-up a world of creativity and possibilities. The image below was taken over the course of 2 minutes whilst my fellow photographer pal Ian Dixon slowly transferred his feet 360 degrees around a pivot point whilst spinning a coloured LED light. Whilst it seems like an easy procedure in theory as the space in the swings has to be kept steady, it's actually rather catchy to form a perfect sphere. Getting it right makes for an interesting effect and something to add further visual interest to a night time landscape photograph.

Night Landscape Photography Suggestions:

Please note you'll need a camera equipped with the flash mode

Look through the optical view finder - Live View is definitely going to be useless to you when composing an image. Better still try and arrive whilst it's still light to permit you to compose the scene and focus

If you have to focus in the dark, make use of a torch to illuminate the focal point by illuminating the desired focus point, and when you can't manually focus, place the lens to infinity and back it off by just a millimetre or two

Set to Auto

With your camera set to Aperture Priority (AV) mode, set the aperture to f/8 and raise your camera's ISO to the maximum (i.e. 1600). Depress the shutter button and observe what the shutter speed that is computed is

Now change from the AV mode to the Flash mode - this is the sole mode which allows you to capture exposures greater than 30 seconds

Eventually, fall the ISO to 100 and adjust the shutter speed to compensate. For example, decreasing the ISO from 1600 down to 100 represents 4 stops (800, 400, 200, 100) where every single time you halve the value it equals to one stop. This implies that if the shutter speed was 30 seconds previously then it'd have to be adjusted to grow by 4 stops which would be 480 secs (8 mins) (60, 120, 240, 480). It's important to maintain depth of field that you want and not the aperture as to modify the shutter speed

Bonus Tip: Avoid turning on the camera's noise reduction as it will lead to taking more for the image to write to the memory card (the same amount of time as required for the exposure) before becoming accessible for viewing on the LCD screen. Instead reduce any sound which could have been added during the Post Production process into the image
