Landscape Photography Techniques

We'll continue our review of techniques and landscape photography hints now. Add these ideas to your landscape and cityscape photographs and you'll start winning photo contests! It is almost a given!

We discussed light yesterday.

First we discussed the color of light... You have to get up early in the morning and start shooting in the 20 or so minutes before dawn. AND you also need to keep shooting for about 20 minutes or so past sunset.

At those times there is a phenomenon we will call a 'fictitious' sunrise and sundown that may produce some absolutely beautiful colours in your landscape and cityscape photographs.

Next we talked about the angle of the light... Consider bodybuilder pictures. The light is coming from about 90 degrees to the area. This creates a lot of shadows that highlight and define their muscles.

At dawn and twilight, the glancing light from the sun is at the perfect angle to generate plenty of darkness that are defining. This will definitely add a lot of third dimensionality to your pictures and make them come alive!

Attempt shooting the same scene at both twilight and dawn, then compare the results to exactly the same scene shot at midday. You may never sleep in again!

Next we mentioned when there are clouds in the sky, shooting. This can add lots of visual interest to the scene - in addition to a lot of color. Now the rising or setting sun has something to bounce off of! When the weather is awful... Get out there! That is certainly the time you'll get the very best shots.

Now, let us add a couple more landscape photography hints and techniques.

Use a tripod! When shooting landscapes, especially in the morning and post sunset times - you will require an extended exposure! (Creating an acceptable depth of field requires shooting at minimal apertures - which means long shutter speeds.) Don't even think of attempting to get a contest winner by shooting handheld. It won't happen.

Afterward, make use of the mirror lockup feature if your camera has one. Most of the better DSLR cameras do.

For the ultimate in photo sharpness - in addition to locking up the mirror, make use of a shutter release that is timed. It may seem like a bit of overkill, but these sharpness techniques can and do make a big change.

Pay attention to the foreground as far as composition is concerned! Use it to draw the viewer's eye into the photo. Use leading lines, framing, diagonals and so forth.

Another compositional element to think about is the horizon, make it level! What exactly is the most crucial element in your landscape or cityscape photo? Is it the sky? If so, place the horizon on the lower third of the shot. Is it the ground? Place the horizon in the upper third.

While there are times that putting the horizon in the middle is the correct call, they are uncommon. Be sure to are in possession of a specific reason to do that!

Last but not least... Make sure your photo has a 'star'. What brought you to the scene? Be sure you emphasize that attribute and drive the viewer's focus to it. Do not make the error of trying to make the entire scene equally important. You require a star.
