Composition - The Core of the Photo

Composition is the core of the photo. Composition results in the work of art that begins from inspiration. Inspiration begins when you free the spirit to have the universe around you and disconnect with the domestic battles of everyday life. Actually being in the moment and experiencing nature links you with all around you.

It might sound like meditation, but awareness of your surroundings without hindrance of thoughts that are external clears the mind and sharpening your perceptions. Where you did not see them before pictures appear. The elements start to align and art appears.

Joseph Cornell in his book 'Listening to Nature How to Deepen Your Awareness of Nature' had this exercise. Walk into an area which you would like to photograph. Instead of shooting and setting up the camera. Sit down. Wait. Relax. Be still and sense the second. Very quietly become conscious of nature. The Native Americans called this 'silent hunting'. You personally will be spoken to by nature, but you must be quiet. Nature speaks softly. Nature will show herself to you if you're patient. And unbelievable pictures will appear.

There are many times that I have entered the woods with camera in hand and not found anything that I needed to photograph. It may be that I was not ready or nature didn't want to show herself. That day perhaps she did not feel photogenic. Scenes appear as if by magic, other days. If you can't find anything to shoot on any specified day, so do not be disappointed. Use that time to scout the place for future chances and revel in the truth that you've got an opportunity to be outside.

Choose this as an opportunity to plan for future shots. At these times believe, what if the light was coming from an alternate way. A better image may be produced by coming back in the early morning or late afternoon. The landscape changes. Maybe shooting together with the foliage in brilliant colors, in the autumn, or winter with a fresh layer of snow would create the photo that you desire.

Do not run yourself when seeking that image. Time with nature is a delight all by its own self. The sheer happiness of being one with the outdoors is worth the encounter if you don't find anything to shoot.

For the photo suggestion of today, lets chat a little about landscape photography hints and techniques. This will definitely be a review of matters we have discussed before, but many of us have not actually tried using them. Place as a goal for this weekend to get out there and use these landscape photography tips and techniques to create something you could take pride in!

Light - with a portrait, we've got complete control. We can adjust the light levels, we can set our light where we want, we can put modifiers in front of it - like umbrellas, scrims, diffusion stuff, gobos and so on... We can do pretty much anything we should get the image our mind has conjured up!

With cityscape and landscape photography, we're pretty much stuck with what nature supplies us. There's not much we can do.

Or is there? With some preplanning, we can practically ensure a gorgeous shot!

In an outdoor, landscape setting, there isn't much we can do to alter or adjust the light, but we can become hyper aware of what light does at various times of day - and in various weather conditions.

First and foremost to achieve success as a landscape or cityscape photographer - you need to truly have a desire to lose sleep.

What am I talking about? Glad you asked! In the event you prefer to begin capturing those spectacular landscape photographs with all the gorgeous colours, there is really just two times of day to shoot - at dusk and at dawn.

But for a photographer, dusk and morning are a bit more expanded than it may seem. About twenty minutes before the sun first peeks over the horizon in the morning there is a 'false' daybreak. You will be given those intense cobalt blue colors you see in competition winners, but haven't been able to find in nature by this time of day!

The colours will start to get pinker, as the sun gets nearer and closer to the horizon. The colours you see at morning are NOT exactly the same as the colors you see at sundown. (They're more red and orange.)

So, pull yourself out of bed a couple hours before dawn so you will have enough time to grab a cup of coffee (so you're conscious enough to focus) and make your way to your predetermined place, get set up and start shooting during the false dawn.

See what I mean about needing an urge to lose sleep? Hereis the good thing, most of your buddies and camera club competition will be snoring away while you 'get the shot!'

By the way, there is a sunset that is fictitious about 20 minutes following the sun goes down. You're not spending that time watching TV are you?

In addition to the excellent colors, you also get excellent light angles!

Consider the last photo you saw of a body builder... Where was the light? I'd venture to guess that it was to the side. Actually about 90 degrees to the camera - version axis.

This peeking side light causes heavy shadowing around the muscles making them seem bigger and truly more defined. The light causes some specular highlights also - which makes the difference between shadow and highlight even more striking.

Now think of your cityscape or your landscape as a muscle bound model. The shadows brought on by the peeking sun will help outline and highlight the forms.

Next appearance for an intriguing scene! Use foreground components to draw the eye into the photo. Make use of the rule of thirds, leading lines, diagonals and other compositional methods to draw the viewer's eye to the 'star' of your photo. (Be sure you've got a well defined 'star!')

Ultimately, throw in several clouds to reflect the colours in the sun and add some visual interest to the sky and you will be well on your own method to winning photo contests!

Do all of this at dawn - then do a picture of exactly the same scene at midday. Ultimately, do it again at sundown and compare all your results. I believe you will rapidly start to comprehend just how important all the photo hints, techniques and rules we've been discussing actually are!

Make a note of these landscape photography tips and techniques, and make it a target to UTILIZE THEM this weekend! Check back tomorrow for more...
